Bristol Pound Ale Trail

Beer tasters at Arbor Brewing Company

The Bristol Pound Ale Trail joins together some of the best drinking the city has to offer, entirely in independent pubs that welcome the Bristol pound.

Below are two routes that both include 5 pubs and should please seasoned real ale lovers and craft beer aficionados alike. One is best suited for a sunny day, the other for an evening out, but we wouldn't advise that you try and complete them consecutively!

Afternoon route:  Tobacco Factory - The Bank Tavern
Combining more modern craft beer pubs with older real ale establishments, this one takes in the entire length of the Bristol Harbourside and is best done on a sunny day with a bicycle.

We begin at the Tobacco Factory (A), a multi-purpose space incorporating a cafe, a pub, a theatre and (crucially) a £B cashpoint! The route then takes you past Bristol Beer Factory's brewery on North Street and across the river to the Grain Barge (B), where you can sun yourself on deck and enjoy some of the Beer Factory's craft beer output.

After that, head up to a little-known but much loved duo of pubs in Hotwells - Bag O' Nails (C) and The Three Tuns (D). Both showcase local favourites from Arbor ales and Wiper and True and are renowned for their traditional and friendly pub ethos, perhaps explaining why the Three Tuns won CAMRA's Bristol pub of the year in 2012.

The route then rounds things off at The Bank Tavern (E), a small but vibrant pub and one of the city centre's hidden gems.

Evening route: White Bear - The Cadbury
This one takes punters through a concentration of great £B pubs around Cotham, Kingsdown and Stokes Croft, and is easy to complete on foot.

Starting at the White Bear (A), it meanders through Kingsdown's hilly backstreets via The Green Man (B) and The Hillgrove (C), both owned by Bristol's own Dawkins Ales. Both specialise in really tasty beer, though the bespoke and candlelit Green Man differs from the Hillgrove's vibrant, good-time atmosphere.

After this, head to the Pipe and Slippers (D) for a quintessentially Stokes Croft pint. Your Bristol Pound will get you a great selection of local beers all week round here, though on Fridays it gets pretty packed and (we think) extra fun.

After this, the options are pretty numerous. To keep on pubbing, head to the weird and wonderful Cadbury (E) in Montpelier, or alternately take your remaining £Bs down to The Full Moon & Attic Bar for something a little more booty-shaking
