How to Join the Bristol Pound
Opening a Bristol Pound account makes it easy for you to support Bristol's independent businesses.
If you are a business interested in accepting Bristol Pounds please fill in this simple form and we will send you all the information you need.
Bristol Pound accounts are held with Bristol Credit Union and so opening an account involves becoming a member of Bristol Credit Union (BCU). Please see side bar for details.
To join Bristol Credit Union and open a Bristol Pound account you will need to live, work, volunteer or go to school/university in our membership area which is any of the four local authority areas which make up the former Avon County (Bristol, Bath & North East Somerset, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire).
If you are already a Bristol Credit Union member all you need to do is fill in a simple form which instructs BCU to open a Bristol Pound account for you.
If you are not a member of Bristol Credit Union the easiest and quickest way to join and open a Bristol Pound account is through our online application.
To join using the online application you will need to:
› live in the membership area (the former Avon county)
› provide your National Insurance number
› have a valid credit or debit card to make an initial deposit (minimum £10)
› have a working email address to receive the link to the application form
› be prepared to have an on-line identity check made (this will not affect your credit rating)
› be over 18 years old
Step 1: Go to our Open an Account page and enter your email address and confirm it in the boxes provided.
Step 2: You will be sent an email to verify your email address. Click on the link in the email to take you to the online application form on the Bristol Credit Union website.
Step 3: Fill in the application form and select an initial amount of sterling that you wish to change to Bristol Pounds. You will also need to make an initial deposit of at least £1 into your new Bristol Credit Union share account. As a BCU member you must keep £1 in your share account as your share in the organisation.
Step 4: After submitting the form, enter your credit or debit card details to make the initial deposit.
Step 5: Choose and confirm a password and 6-digit security PIN for accessing your BCU account online. Please note these details are for using the BCU website only and will not be used for accessing your Bristol Pound account which uses a different online system.
Step 6: You will then be notified of your Bristol Credit Union and Bristol Pound membership number!
If you are not able to join online you can download a membership form, print, complete and take to Bristol Credit Union, 112 Cheltenham Road, Bristol, BS6 5RW.
