Bristol Pound Business Award: Kiri’s Barbers

Written by Michaela Parker

The winner of this month’s Bristol Pound Business Award, as voted for by you, stands as part of the little bank of shops across from the entrance to Clifton Down Shopping Centre. Nestled between several other independent stores, Kiri Yiasemi’s business has been part of the furniture there for 17 years and he loves being a part of Clifton’s own Whiteladies Road. “It did die down a little bit for a while but it’s picking up again now and it’s great!” says Kiri. “There’s a vibrant energy around the place and with all the coffee shops and restaurants, it’s a great place to be.” Delighted to be voted for by his loyal customers, he reminds me as I leave, “Please thank whoever voted for me, it’s great!”

Kiri’s Barbers became part of the Bristol Pound in late 2012 and is a huge fan of what the currency stands for. “It’s lovely,” he says, smiling. “It’s like a little passport that says “I love Bristol!” You tend to find the people that use the £B have passion about their city – it really makes people feel like they’re making a difference, you know?”

As well as the delicious-smelling Fudge and American Crew styling products, Kiri’s customers can expect anything from a basic beard trim to any manner of haircut, from a simple trim to a more creative style though the ambitious owner is looking to expand soon. His plans to move into a bigger premises (but still on Whiteladies Road, so fear not loyal customers!) will see him offering more grooming services, such as shaving and threading.

Asked where he spends his £Bs, Kiri’s answer is simple. “Better Food Company,” he laughs, pointing up the hill towards the Clifton branch. “Though I have to admit, I’d probably still be shopping there without them, it’s great in there!” I smile as he adds excitedly, “The ones that come in by text though, I leave in my account. When it slowly builds up, I’ll pay off a month’s council tax with it. That’s the challenge anyway, I thought it’d be a nice thing to do!” Now, we love a man who enjoys a challenge!

Visit Kiri’s Barbers at Unit 3 Clifton Metro, Whiteladies Road BS8 2NP but be sure to contact the man himself first to book an appointment so that you aren’t left disappointed. Call 0117 970 6084. The salon is open Monday – Friday from 9:30am – 6:30pm and from 9:30am – 5pm on Saturdays.
