General questions about the new platform

1What is happening?
Bristol Pound and new technical partner Payji are developing a new platform on which to operate. Therefore, Bristol Pound accounts are moving away from Bristol Credit Union to sit on the new platform, called Bristol Pay.
2Why is it happening?
This is an opportunity for Bristol Pound to grow, develop and improve the way in which the currency operates. You can read more about why this change is happening in the blog section of the website and read about the future vision in the Vision section.
3Will my Bristol Pound account automatically change to a Bristol Pay account?
No, technically Bristol Pay is a new scheme so your Bristol Pound account will close and you’ll be invited to open a Bristol Pay account. We’re working hard to ensure that opening a new account is as simple as possible.
4Will the balance of my Bristol Pound account be transferred to my Bristol Pay account?
When you open a Bristol Pay account you will be given the option of transferring your funds from your Bristol Pound account.
5What will happen to the money in my account if I do not transfer it to a Bristol Pay account?
Once Bristol Pound accounts are closed all remaining balances will convert to sterling held with BCU. They will remain fully protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme and will attract future dividend payments in the same way as other sterling deposits with BCU. You will be able to access this money via BCU.
6I pay my council tax / business rates / energy bill with Bristol Pounds, can this continue?
As of the 4th of July, recurring payments cannot be made with Bristol Pounds. This means that any payments currently being made to Bristol City Council, Bristol Energy or Good Energy will have to be made via another method.

7When will all the changes be taking place?
Timeline of relevant dates from BCU:

1st June 2020:
No new Bristol Pound accounts will be opened on the old digital platform.

4th July 2020:
Payments for business rates, council tax, energy bills etc will no longer be available.

10th July 2020:
Last date for automatic top up of Bristol Pound accounts on the old platform with BCU. BCU will still manually top up accounts on an as & when basis until 7th August, but these could take up to 2 working days to process.

7th August 2020:
Last date that app, SMS and online payments except for transfers to sterling will be available.

21st August 2020:
Final closure of the Bristol Pound accounts on the old platform.

Regarding individual accounts

1What will happen to the scheduled payments on my Bristol Pound account?
From 3rd of July, scheduled payments will no longer operate on Bristol Pound accounts. Please arrange to pay any bills (including council tax or business rates) via another method. Bristol Pay accounts will have the option to set up scheduled payments.
2Will I be able to use Bristol Pay in the same places as Bristol Pound?
Bristol Pay is a new scheme so only businesses that open a new account will accept Bristol Pay payments. The new platform will have greater functionality and will be easier for businesses to use so we hope that uptake will go beyond the current number of Bristol Pound businesses.

Regarding business accounts

1Why is this happening?
One of the main reasons for the change from Bristol Pound to Bristol Pay is the opportunity to make using the system easier for businesses.

We understand that operating a Bristol Pound account was not always easy, Bristol Pay aims to make all the processes from opening an account to balancing your books, as straightforward as possible.
2Will my Bristol Pound account automatically change to a Bristol Pay account?
No, technically Bristol Pay is a new scheme so your Bristol Pound account will close and you’ll be invited to open a Bristol Pay account. We’re working hard to ensure that opening a new account is as simple as possible.
