Our new paper pound launch party – thank you

Huge thanks to everyone who attended our launch party for the new Bristol Pounds at Spike Island Cafe on 5th July – it was a fabulous evening!

As well as showing off the beautiful new designs and thanking the talented artists who created them, we wanted to raise awareness of the expiration of the 2015 edition of the Bristol Pounds.

The new designs and the timeline for the retiring of the old money can be found here – you can spend your existing pounds until 30th September and exchange them until 31st December.

It was great to see our guests queuing up to exchange their old Bristol Pounds for the shiny new editions, withdrawing money using the app and exchanging sterling ready to spend with local businesses. Some lucky people even got their hands on some signed copies and posed with the artists and their giant editions of the money!

Did you know, for every £B1 spent, 80p stays in the local economy versus 20p of £1 sterling?

Our evening kicked off with an awards ceremony for our nine winning artists: Marta Zubieta, Kesdraws, Radley Cook, Emma Burleigh, Kiwani Dolean, Stella Holmes, George Mcguigan, Elaine Grieg and Mary Collett – read interviews with each artist here.

We presented everyone with an exclusive framed edition of the new money to show our appreciation for their talent and hard work. Thank you all!

Next on the programme were four PechaKucha talks from some of our trader members, who shared 20 x 20 second images and told us a bit about their business story so far. Thank you John Drysdale from Small Street Espresso / Little Victories, Stacey Fordham from Zero Green, Sarah Thorp from Room 212 / 212 Eco House and Ben Moss from Bristol Wood Recycling Project.

All four organisations accept Bristol Pounds and are doing some really exciting things in and around Bristol. These themes cropped up in every talk:

    • Using Bristol Pounds helps support our local economy and promotes a sense of community in one of the UK’s biggest cities
    • Companies using Bristol Pounds provides a space for users and members to come together and celebrate local independence
    • Bristol Pound is valuable to companies committed to a sustainable future

Finally we heard from our departing MD, Ciaran Mundy, who summed up the Bristol Pound ethos; emphasising connectivity, community and support. We’d like to wish Ciaran the very best of luck in all his future adventures.

Another huge thank you to everyone who entered the design competition and a very well done to those artists who now have their work displayed on the 2018 edition of the Bristol Pounds.
